Adding A Quantity Box and Add to Cart Button to List Category Pages
This is the second post in our series on customising Magento. Today we’ll look at putting a quantity box and “Add to cart” button on the category page next to our products in list view.
Usually, a wholesale customer is placing an order for large numbers of items. Forcing the customer to drill down into an individual product is not ideal. Rather, we want our customer to be able to specify quanities and click the Add to Cart button, and keep moving right down the page. Using this fix, we can do just that.
In the theme’s /template/catalog/product/list.phtml file, change the <button> line near line 108 from this:
<?php if($_product->isSaleable()): ?> <button onclick=”setLocation(‘<?php echo $this->getAddToCartUrl($_product) ?>’)”><span><?php echo $this->__(‘Add to Cart’) ?></span></button>
To this:
<form action=”<?php echo $this->getAddToCartUrl($_product) ?>” method=”post” id=”product_addtocart_form_<?php echo $_product->getId(); ?>”>
<input name=”qty” type=”text” id=”qty” maxlength=”12″ value=”<?php echo $this->getMinimalQty($_product) ?>” />
<button-button” onclick=”productAddToCartForm_<?php echo $_product->getId(); ?>.submit()”><span><?php echo $this->__(‘Add to Cart’) ?></span></button>
</form>
<script type=”text/javascript”>
var productAddToCartForm_<?php echo $_product->getId(); ?> = new VarienForm(‘product_addtocart_form_<?php echo $_product->getId(); ?>’);
productAddToCartForm_<?php echo $_product->getId(); ?>.submit = function(){
if (this.validator.validate()) {
this.form.submit();
}
}.bind(productAddToCartForm_<?php echo $_product->getId(); ?>);
</script>
This change needs to be applied in two places. A search on isSaleable() will show you where these lines are located.
That’s all for this one, nice and simple! Hope you find it useful.
Adding Custom Attributes to Product Categories in Magento
This is the first in a series of helpful quick posts which give short guides on how to deal with Magento, the open source e-commerce platform.
Today we are going to look at how to add custom attributes to products within category listings. Magento can be a complete minefield to even the most experienced users, things which seem simple can often be quite difficult to achieve!
To display custom attributes paste this code into your list.phtml file
<?php echo $_product->getResource()->getAttribute(‘CustomAttribute’)->getFrontend()->getValue($_product); ?>
Make sure you change the ‘CustomAttribute’ section to the name of the chosen attribute you wish to display.
That’s all there is to it, hope you guys find this helpful!

Hub Local is a free directory for local businesses in the Midlands area! When we say something is free, we mean it!
The Big Redesign… Take Two!
As you may (or may not) remember, the Hub Internet Media Website underwent a major redesign earlier this year, updating our image and bringing our site in line with the quality of work that we offer to our clients. Never ones to be idle, we took stock of our website once again recently, and the result is what you see now!
What does your Twitter say about you?
If you’ve left it plain, with the default background and colours, I’m afraid it says uncomplimentary things behind your back, probably with nudges and disapproving looks. Twitter isn’t Facebook. It’s not a site where everyone’s page looks the same. In terms of customisation, Twitter is pretty high up the food chain. You can change the background, the text colour, the text box colour, your logo/profile picture, the lot. And while some people say “just because you can doesn’t mean you should”, in this case you absolutely should. You’ve been given all of these options for a reason after all. If you Twitter page doesn’t look something like this then you’re doing it wrong.

Case Study: WarAnvil
In our second Case Study we’re going to take a look at WarAnvil. WarAnvil is a World of Warcraft focussed blog. The Website also offers other features, but we’ll be focussing on the blog and Website setup today!
The WarAnvil staff got in touch with us when they wanted to redesign their Website. The old blog was not doing anything for them, and the overall look and feel of the Website was harming their traffic. The old site lacked some of the basic features that make a blog easy to navigate and update. The staff needed a CMS that was easy to use, with analytics readily available. They needed to have a contact form for easy contact with their readers and an RSS feed.
External Environment Services Site Redesign

This morning I want to talk about the recent redesign we completed for External Environment Services.
In the example of External Environment Services they had a website developed way back in 2005. At the time the website was more than good enough to convey their message across the Internet. It completed their total business image. But that was back in 2005, times have changed!
We find from speaking with more and more customers that they tend to have websites in place from 2006 and earlier. In every case they at the very least need their sites design updating. Of course that’s the least they can do. Social media and new web standards are now in place which give so many benefits if they are followed.
Ok so follow on for the complete breakdown of the External Environment Services website!
The Importance of Being a Twit(terer)
As you may have noticed, our Twitter account has been subjected to a flurry of activity in the last couple of days, with our Following count rising to just over 1,000. This activity is overdue, but more importantly it’s necessary. The impact that Twitter especially has on the Internet as a whole these days is incredible. From humble beginnings, it’s now got to the point where millions of people will hang on the 140 characters of a total stranger. Actors, comedians, politicians, market leaders… these heavyweights dictate their messages to the ‘Net 140 characters at a time. By and large, these short messages will be read and forgotten, but every now and then, something big comes out of it.
Case Study: Principal Impressions
This is the first blog entry of many, we will outline how we tackle the process of web development. The first subject is Principal Impressions.
Principal Impression specializes in environmental construction. The main focus of their business is the design and implementation of storm water management systems. Also known as storm water bioretention. It’s all pretty complicated stuff!
We were initially contacted by the owner of Principal Impressions. He wanted a Website to inform his clients on all aspects of vertical greening systems. If anything he wanted an information based site, to which he could send potential clients to learn about the benefits of having vertical greening and storm water bioretention implemented. The first thing we do in every case of Website design is to meet the client and discus just exactly what is needed. This aspect of our service sets us apart from most Website development companies, our customer service is second to none. We strive to make sure our clients fully understand just what we are going to do, and how it will be achieved. After all, the finished Website is not for us, its for our clients!
After the initial briefing we came down to these conclusions:
- Around 10 pages would be needed
- Contact form
- Flash banner
- Hosting/Maintenance package
