Facebook for businesses
We’ve extolled the virtues of Twitter here on Hub Internet Media many times, but there’s another social platform that’s never really got a mention. That platform, as I’m sure you’ve guessed from the title, is Facebook. One of the things we love about Twitter is how simple it is, and how many people you can reach with something as simple as a link or a question. It’s possible to follow any number of other companies or people, and talking to those people is incredibly easy. It’s possible to lose hours just talking to people via Twitter; the pace of it is such that you don’t really notice just how quickly time goes by.
Facebook is not as simple. It requires some time to get set up, you need to fill out a lot more in terms of information, and of course if applicable, there are images and videos to upload, links to place on your profile page… the list goes on. Is it worth the effort though?
Of course it is. While Twitter is good for quick bursts of advertising and messaging, Facebook is far more prolonged. You make friends with other business, get to see them at work, and follow their activities as they do business. With status updates and links that give snippets of content from websites, you can keep other businesses informed of what you’re doing on a day to day basis with detail that you wouldn’t see from Twitter. That’s not the only benefit, either. It’s perfectly plausible to use Facebook as a method for getting referrals and new business. After all, people see a more personable side to your business over Facebook. They’re not so much talking to the company as they are talking to the people IN the company. That might just seem like a difference in phrasing, but it’s actually a very important thing to remember. Familiarity will help when approaching people, and Facebook is excellent for allowing people to get to know you.
We update our Facebook profile every day. We share links, we leave comments on other peoples updates. We use it not just to communicate as a business, but as people running a business. Facebook is worthy of just as much time as Twitter, if not a little more. After all, it’s still the biggest social network in the world, and you can’t turn down free advertising like that.
